Chapter 17: Lawless Ash

Warwick and his nephews stood together in front of the mission master in the Hunters’ Association lobby after completing a grueling mission in the nearby Esper Mines. It was such a strange dungeon; the various giant bug-like enemies had gained elemental affinities thanks to leaks of various genetic materials being transported by the dungeon boss, Overlord Sechsen, and his human followers, zealots who worshipped the Overlords. There had been two mini-bosses before Sechsen himself, making it the most grueling dungeon yet, with enemies casting negative status effects left and right.

“You play this game too much, Unc,” a smiling Goodwing said. “We can barely keep up with you.”

He twirled his shiny new silver pistols as he waited for Warwick to turn in the last major mission they had here in Lucio City. Along with his now trademark winged cape, he was now wearing some spiffier duds to complete his superhero look. Warwick was surprised to see that he even had the skills to equip the exo-armor, a form fitting style of armored defensive gear. Goodwing’s armor was a sleeveless forest-green top with matching gauntlets, and a similar set of navy leggings that covered his feet as well. It gave him a robotic look, with only his exposed biceps, face, and hair reminding Warwick that the avatar was a human one.

“Why do you think I’m inviting you to all my missions with me now?” said Warwick, whose own avatar had also underwent a few updates these last three weeks. “The only ones I do on my own are the Secret Ops.”

Goodwing was correct to say that Warwick played the game way too much. He practically lived here whenever he wasn’t at school or surfing the net for clues about Tabitha and the shady guys who’d roughed him up the day of her funeral. Ever since Floe had terrorized him, he had decided not to play alone, for the most part at least. There were still a few sessions where he’d grind up his skills alone, and he preferred to tackle all of his Secret Ops alone so as not to spoil the quest for his nephews, and he had to admit that he liked the challenge of occasionally going solo. He kept his Flash Bang close at hand whenever he did go out by himself.

Unlike Goodwing, Warwick wasn’t able to equip anything that required a skill to use, so he was forced to stick with basic clothes. He hadn’t come across anyone selling armor skills either. None of the clothes came with stat benefits, but some players and NPCs were able to infuse special abilities to clothes. Warwick and Professor D frequented the Lucio City Tailor and the player shops in search of useful and fashionable articles of clothing.

D was currently decked out in the brightest purple suit Warwick had ever seen. It hurt his eyes every time D stepped into his periphery. Warwick himself now wore long navy pants that had the look of a Japanese hakama. The
